Preparing for New Pup ~ Helpful Tips in the Download Above

puppy kibble

I start them out on Royal Cainin puppy. It has very small kibble. Then, as they get a little older, introduce them to the brand I am using, 4Health Endurance 90 Formula. It is rated for all stages in a puppy's or dog's life. It is higher in protein.
You can purchase it at Tractor Supply in Molalla.

Sometimes, if the stool won’t firm up, you can add some pure 100% pumpkin.

It’s best to use the same brand your puppy is already on. Sometimes they don’t tolerate change well.

puppy mush & goats milk

I have started them out on this. I will tell you when you pick up your pup if you need to purchase these two products. Hopefully, your pup is comfortable without going in this direction.

Goat's milk and starter puppy mush. Petco has the puppy mush, and Fred Meyer's and a few other stores sell goat milk. I found that the recent Traditional Yorkie puppy likes the Fresh Pet log.

I also give a spoonful of Cottage Cheese for calcium for growing teeth and to help firm up the ears. You can also add an egg yolk, but no egg white. According to a vet, egg whites are hard for them to digest.

Thin this mixture with 1 to 1 water and goat milk.

I thin it down with the water because it is too thick.

puppy play pen bed

There are three things to put in the playpen.

  •  A small bed,
  •  Pee pad tray.
  •  Food & water.
  • Maybe a few toys

This is a playpen that I use for the puppy bed, about 36 in square.  You could also use a crate. Just make sure the puppy can't get through the holes. I put a small bed in this Iris pen, pictured above, and a pee pad tray with a grate on top of the disposable pee pad. I covered the floor with two grated pee pad trays for one complex case. The puppy had no choice but to pee on the pee pad and not the floor.  I also found a cat bed, approximately 12 x 12, so the pup wouldn’t have space to dirty her own bed. That worked out nicely. Potty training needs to be consistent to be successful. Whatever works. They want to tear up the disposable pads, and they will eat them. So the grate will help hide the pee pad in the tray. Then, put the food and water in the pen. The pen must be small so they learn to potty on the tray. They usually don't want to soil their bed. So, keeping the area small for a time helps with the potty training. You can still play with them, just don't let them run the house.

I also like the wire playpen at an older age. They can see out better and aren't so bored. I use them when the puppies are a bit older and for the adults.
BUT! There is a but. If the pup starts chewing on the wire pen, put it back into the plastic pen. One of mine had its tooth stuck in the wire, so that wasn’t acceptable. There is always something.

I use Wonderside because it is safe from poison side affects.

Use baby Shampoo for the face, non-sting for eyes and dog shampoo for the body.

food & water dishes

food & water dishes

You will need a food and water bowl. I like ceramic because they are easy to clean and heavy enough so pups don't tip them over. I want them shallow so they don't fall in. And  water should be changed every day so it is fresh.
